Iain Macleod QPM (Queen’s Police Medal)

Biography

Iain is joining the patient panel at the conference as deputy chair. He lives in John Swinney’s constituency and knows the First Minister from his time working for the police.

I live just outside Perth with my wife Jackie. We have a grown-up daughter and son and five grandchildren. I spent 35 years in policing finishing as a Deputy Chief Constable. In June 2018 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer with metastasis to the liver and bladder. The nature of the spread was inoperable, and I initially commenced palliative chemotherapy. It was then found that I was suitable for targeted therapy, and the combination did a huge job which got me to surgery in March 2019. No recurrence since. My circumstances sparked my interest in cancer research generally and CRUK had been my go-to place from the time of diagnosis. That led me to joining the CRUK Policy and Communications Cancer Insights Panel where I spent a very enjoyable 3 years. The next logical step was as an Ambassador which I have been doing for 2 years.
